UPI Autopay is the recurring-mandate feature of UPI, run by NPCI. The payer approves a mandate once, setting the biller, amount (fixed or up to a maximum), frequency and validity. The payer gets a notification before each debit and can pause or revoke the mandate from the UPI app. Under the RBI e-mandate framework, debits above a set value (currently ₹15,000 for most categories) need additional authentication each time.
How it works in India
The supplier sends a mandate request through a collection platform. The buyer opens it in any UPI app linked to its bank account, checks the details and approves with the UPI PIN. Before each scheduled debit, the buyer receives a notification. On the due date the amount is debited and credited to the supplier. If the account has insufficient balance or the mandate has been paused, the debit fails and the platform records the failure.
| Feature | UPI Autopay | NACH e-mandate |
|---|---|---|
| Set up | UPI app, UPI PIN | Net banking, debit card or Aadhaar |
| Best for | Small, frequent amounts | Larger instalments |
| Registration | Instant | Typically a few working days |
| Payer control | Pause or revoke in app | Cancel through bank |
Why it matters for getting paid
For small clients, the main reason for late payment is friction, not refusal. A mandate approved once removes that friction for the whole relationship. Failed debits are also an early warning: a client who revokes a mandate is signalling trouble long before an invoice turns 90 days old. Pair mandates with payment reminders so that failures are followed up the same day.
How FundRaksha uses it
FundRaksha Collect offers UPI Autopay and NACH mandates with automated reminders, for a 1% fee on what is collected. If a client stops paying altogether, the account can be handed to FundRaksha Legal, where a notice goes out within 24 hours. Learn more at https://collect.fundraksha.com or in a free consultation.
Worked example (hypothetical)
A Hyderabad facility-management firm bills 40 small office clients ₹12,000 a month each, a total of ₹4,80,000. Previously, a third of clients paid after the 20th. The firm moves clients to UPI Autopay mandates of ₹12,000 a month. Because each debit is below the additional-authentication threshold, it runs without the client approving it every month. In the first month, 37 debits succeed (₹4,44,000) and 3 fail; reminders recover those 3 within a week. The Collect fee at 1% on ₹4,80,000 is ₹4,800.
