Overtime calculator: overtime pay at twice the normal rate

Enter the monthly or daily wage, normal hours and overtime hours, and the calculator works out the normal hourly rate, the overtime rate and the overtime pay for the month. It uses the double-rate rule in section 14 of the Code on Wages, 2019, and lets you choose the divisor your policy uses.

Normal daily rate
₹692.31
Monthly ÷ 26 days
Normal hourly rate
₹86.54
Daily ÷ 8 hours
Overtime rate an hour
₹173.08
2 × the hourly rate
Overtime pay
₹3,461.54
20 hours this month
How each number is worked out
  • Daily rate: ₹18,000 ÷ 26 = ₹692.31.
  • Hourly rate: ₹692.31 ÷ 8 = ₹86.54.
  • Overtime: ₹86.54 × 2 × 20 hours = ₹3,461.54.

Section 14 of the Code on Wages, 2019: for every hour or part of an hour worked beyond a normal working day, the overtime rate is not less than twice the normal rate of wages. Normal hours and the overtime limit come from the OSH Code and State rules (commonly 8 hours a day). The divisor used to turn a monthly wage into a daily rate is not fixed by the Code; 26 working days is the most common, and some States or contracts use 30 or the days in the month.

Short answer

Overtime pay = hourly rate × 2 × overtime hours, where the hourly rate is the monthly wage ÷ the days used for the daily rate (26 is the most common) ÷ normal hours a day (usually 8). Section 14 of the Code on Wages, 2019 requires overtime at not less than twice the normal rate of wages for every hour or part of an hour beyond a normal working day. Example: ₹18,000 a month ÷ 26 ÷ 8 = ₹86.54 an hour, so 20 hours of overtime is ₹3,461.54.

How overtime is worked out

  1. Find the wage for overtime. Most employers use the ordinary rate of wages: basic plus dearness allowance. Some include fixed allowances; follow your appointment letter, policy or State rule.
  2. Turn it into a daily rate. Divide the monthly wage by the days your policy uses. Many State minimum wage notifications use 26 days.
  3. Turn the daily rate into an hourly rate. Divide by the normal hours in a day, usually 8.
  4. Double it. The overtime rate is at least twice the hourly rate. A policy may pay more, never less.
  5. Multiply by the overtime hours in the wage period, counting part hours.
